The 5 Most Important Supplements to Use If You Are Using a GLP-1

GLP-1 medications have changed the way many people approach weight management and blood-sugar control. Medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound can reduce appetite, increase fullness and make it easier to eat fewer calories.

Eating less can also make it harder to get enough protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and fluids. Nausea, constipation, diarrhea and other digestive effects can add to the challenge.

I am writing part of this from experience. I used a GLP-1 myself, and several of the gaps below are ones I ran into personally, not just ones I read about.

Supplements cannot replace a balanced diet, resistance training or medical care. They can help fill specific gaps when food alone is not meeting your needs. If we had to rank the five most useful supplement categories for most adults using a GLP-1, this would be our order:

  1. Protein
  2. Fiber
  3. Electrolytes
  4. A multivitamin and mineral formula
  5. Creatine monohydrate

Not everyone needs all five. Your medication, diet, health history, lab results and side effects should determine which ones make sense for you.

1. Protein Powder

Protein is number one because holding on to muscle should be a priority during any significant weight loss.

When appetite and total food intake drop, protein intake usually drops with them. Weight loss can include lean tissue as well as body fat, especially when calories get very low or resistance training is missing. Adequate protein, combined with strength training, gives your body what it needs to maintain muscle.

How Much Protein Do GLP-1 Users Need?

Individual needs vary, but a JAMA Internal Medicine patient guide recommends roughly 1.0 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day for moderately active adults using a GLP-1 medication.

That does not mean everyone should jump straight to the top of that range. Age, activity level, body composition, kidney function and your healthcare provider's advice all matter.

Start with protein-rich foods such as:

  • Eggs
  • Greek yogurt
  • Chicken or turkey
  • Fish
  • Lean meat
  • Cottage cheese
  • Beans and lentils
  • Tofu and other soy foods

A protein supplement earns its place when reduced appetite makes it hard to eat enough protein from regular meals.

Why Clear Whey May Work Well for GLP-1 Users

Many people find a thick, creamy shake feels too heavy when their appetite is suppressed. Clear whey mixes into a lighter, fruit-flavored drink that is easier to sip over time.

Brent's take: "When my appetite dropped, a regular shake felt like a meal I could not finish. Clear whey was the protein I could reliably get down, a few sips at a time over the morning."

NutraBio Clear Whey Protein Isolate provides 20 grams of complete whey protein with 80 calories, zero sugar and less than one gram of carbohydrates per serving. Count it as part of your total daily nutrition, not as a replacement for every meal.

2. Fiber

Fiber is number two because constipation is one of the most common digestive complaints among people using GLP-1 medications.

Eating less often means eating fewer vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains, which can cut total daily fiber significantly. Fiber supports digestive health and normal bowel regularity, and both soluble and insoluble fiber play a role.

Brent's take: "This is one I learned the hard way. While I was on a GLP-1, I needed fiber, badly."

Food Should Be Your First Fiber Source

Whenever possible, prioritize fiber-rich foods such as:

  • Vegetables
  • Berries
  • Apples and pears
  • Beans and lentils
  • Oats
  • Whole grains
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Avocado

If those foods are not getting you there, a powder is a convenient way to close the gap. Vital Planet Vital Fiber combines organic fiber from pea hull, brown flaxseed and hemp. One scoop provides six grams of dietary fiber, and two scoops provide 13 grams.

Increase Fiber Gradually

Adding a large amount of fiber suddenly can cause gas, bloating and more discomfort. Start with a smaller serving and increase gradually according to the label and your healthcare provider's advice.

Fiber also needs fluid. Increasing fiber without increasing water can make constipation worse for some people.

Fiber supplements can affect how some oral medications are absorbed. Ask your pharmacist whether your fiber should be separated from your medication by a specific amount of time.

3. Electrolytes and Hydration Support

Water remains the foundation of hydration. An electrolyte supplement becomes useful when someone is sweating heavily, exercising, eating very little or losing fluid through vomiting or diarrhea.

GLP-1-related nausea and fullness can make drinking enough fluid harder. Small sips throughout the day are often more comfortable than a large amount at once. Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and magnesium support normal fluid balance, nerve signaling and muscle function.

Brent's take: "This is another one I learned from personal experience. My GLP-1 dried me out hard, and LMNT was a huge help."

LMNT Electrolyte Drink Mix provides sodium, potassium and magnesium in individual packets with no added sugar.

More Electrolytes Are Not Always Better

LMNT contains 1,000 milligrams of sodium per packet. That can suit active people with higher sodium losses, but it is not right for everyone.

People with high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, fluid-retention concerns or a prescribed low-sodium diet should ask their healthcare provider before using a high-sodium electrolyte product.

An electrolyte mix is not a substitute for medical care. Report persistent vomiting, severe diarrhea, dizziness, very dark urine, reduced urination or an inability to keep fluids down to a healthcare professional.

4. A Multivitamin and Mineral Formula

GLP-1 medications do not automatically cause vitamin deficiencies. The concern is that smaller meals and less appetite can reduce both the amount and the variety of food someone eats.

A multivitamin provides broad nutritional coverage when food intake becomes limited. Treat it as a backup, not permission to ignore food quality.

Life Extension Two-Per-Day Multivitamin is a high-potency vitamin and mineral formula covering a wide range of essential micronutrients.

Do You Automatically Need a Multivitamin?

No. Someone still eating a varied, nutrient-dense diet may already be meeting most of their needs. A multivitamin makes more sense when someone:

  • Regularly skips meals
  • Eats very small portions
  • Has dropped several major food groups
  • Follows a highly restrictive diet
  • Has a confirmed or suspected nutritional gap
  • Has been advised to take one by a healthcare professional

More is not always better with vitamins and minerals. Avoid stacking several products with overlapping nutrients without checking the totals. Anyone taking blood thinners or other prescription medications should check with their healthcare provider or pharmacist before starting a high-potency multivitamin.

5. Creatine Monohydrate

Creatine is number five because it supports strength and resistance-training performance, which helps keep a productive training program going while you lose weight.

Creatine does not prevent muscle loss on its own, and it does not replace protein or strength training. Its benefits matter most when it is paired with consistent resistance exercise.

Creatine monohydrate is one of the most extensively studied sports-nutrition ingredients. It increases muscle phosphocreatine stores, which regenerate energy during short, high-intensity efforts such as lifting.

Brent's take: "I kept lifting and kept taking creatine the whole time I was on a GLP-1. Holding on to my strength was the thing I cared about most, and the scale was not the only number I watched."

Rule 1 Creatine provides five grams of creatine monohydrate per serving and is unflavored, so it mixes easily into water or a protein shake.

Creatine Is Supportive, Not GLP-1-Specific

Research supports creatine for high-intensity training, strength and lean-mass development when combined with exercise. Research looking specifically at creatine in people using GLP-1 medications is still limited, which makes creatine a useful optional addition rather than a universal requirement.

Creatine can cause a small increase in scale weight because it increases water stored inside muscle. That is not the same as gaining body fat.

People with kidney disease, abnormal kidney tests or another condition affecting fluid balance should talk to their healthcare provider before using creatine.

A Simple GLP-1 Supplement Routine

A practical routine does not need dozens of products. A simple approach looks like this:

  1. Prioritize protein-rich food at every meal.
  2. Use protein powder only when food falls short.
  3. Get fiber from fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains before adding a powder.
  4. Increase supplemental fiber gradually and drink enough water.
  5. Use electrolytes when your activity, fluid losses and medical needs justify them.
  6. Consider a multivitamin if eating less is creating nutritional gaps.
  7. Pair creatine with a consistent resistance-training program.

My own day on a GLP-1 came down to clear whey in the morning, fiber with plenty of water, an LMNT packet on training days and five grams of creatine. Nothing fancy, and that was the point.

The goal of supplementation is to solve a specific nutritional problem, not to build the longest possible supplement list.

Supplements That Did Not Make the Top Five

Several other supplements may suit certain GLP-1 users, including:

  • Vitamin D
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Probiotics
  • Collagen
  • Essential amino acids

They did not make the top five because the need for them is more individual. Someone with low vitamin D confirmed through bloodwork may benefit more from vitamin D than from an electrolyte product. Someone who does not eat fish may put omega-3s higher on the list. Someone dealing with a specific digestive issue may need individual guidance rather than a general recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most important supplement for someone using a GLP-1?

For most people, protein powder, because reduced appetite makes it hard to meet protein needs through food alone. Pair it with resistance training if preserving strength and muscle is the goal.

Can I take all five supplements together?

Some adults can use all five, but that does not mean everyone needs them. Review the products with your healthcare provider or pharmacist, especially if you take medication or have diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, high blood pressure or digestive problems.

Do these supplements reduce GLP-1 side effects?

These products are not treatments for medication side effects. Fiber and hydration may support normal digestive function, but persistent or severe symptoms should be discussed with the healthcare professional prescribing your medication.

Can fiber make constipation worse?

Yes, especially if fiber is increased too quickly or taken without enough fluid. Start gradually and drink enough water unless a healthcare professional has told you to restrict fluids.

Do I need electrolytes every day?

Not necessarily. Daily needs depend on diet, activity, climate, sweating and medical history, and high-sodium electrolyte products are not appropriate for everyone.

Will creatine stop weight loss?

Creatine does not cause fat gain, but it can increase water held inside muscle and cause a small rise in scale weight. Judge progress on more than a single scale reading.

Should I take additional appetite suppressants with a GLP-1?

Do not automatically combine a prescription GLP-1 with an appetite suppressant or stimulant-based fat burner. Discuss any combination with the healthcare professional managing your medication.

Final Thoughts

GLP-1 medications make eating less much easier, and eating less makes food quality matter more.

Protein, fiber, hydration, vitamins and minerals, and resistance-training support should be matched to your individual needs. Supplements can fill gaps, but they do not replace nutrient-dense food, physical activity or professional medical guidance.

If I could go back, I would have set up protein and fiber before my first dose instead of figuring them out after the problems showed up. Start with the biggest gap in your current routine rather than adding everything at once. For most GLP-1 users, that means protein first.
