Time Blocking: Harnessing the Power of Compound Effort
by Brent Sheckler December 13, 2021
Everyone hears "set your goals", right? But what strategies actually work to help push the needle forward on a consistent basis?
Time Blocking
Time blocking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help you achieve your goals. It's a strategy that involves dedicating specific time blocks during your day to accomplish certain tasks. When you time block, you're essentially scheduling time for your goals just like you would any other appointment.
The idea with time blocking in general is that in today's easily-distractible world, if you don't make time for actions that give you traction, then you will choose distraction every time. The actions that are the most effective at producing success are the ones that are important but not necessarily urgent. Most of the time, there is no one holding you accountable to do them but you.
The important thing to remember is that by regularly scheduling activities that move you forward, you are being consistent. Think of it this way - if you don't walk for 30 minutes every day, will your life fall apart? Of course not. But, if you DO walk for 15-30 minutes a day, every day- will your life improve? Absolutely.
Sunday Night Prep
So, Sunday night is a good night to plan for the week ahead. What are the things you want to accomplish this week? What time blocks will you set aside for each activity?
Things like meals, workouts, preparation, stretching, and recovery techniques are all equally important parts of accomplishing your fitness goals. Making specific time for them keeps you on point, reminding yourself that your health is a top priority. This will carry over into other decisions you make throughout the day and week, steering you toward the choice that will keep your momentum going.
The time blocks don't have to be huge chunks of time. In fact, the most effective time blocks are usually around 30 minutes. This is enough time to get in a good workout, cook a healthy meal, or do some stretching and relaxation techniques. But you can also break these time blocks down into smaller increments if that's what works.
Schedule You Time
By time blocking, you are also forcing yourself to schedule time for relaxation. You can schedule time to go for a walk, read a book, or decompress in whatever way works best for you. Remember that time blocking is not time management - it's time AND energy management. Managing your time AND energy ensures that you're getting through your day with plenty of both.
